Cover Letter for Peer Profile

      College. All classmates inside the four walls of the classroom are far away stars to which I don’t even glance. The distance between students might be kilometers, with friendships being rare. An occasional conversation might happen, but the lack of depth and connection shapes the lack of empathy. Isolation has never been natural for human beings. 

 

      Adapting to such loneliness might be harder for some, not including myself. However, it is rare and unnatural. At least it’s how it felt when my days in the city started. Isolating myself has always been easier, instead of deep connections that may lead to the need of expressing my thoughts, emotions or ideas. An event that I rather avoid.

 

      Monon was a stranger to me until last Tuesday at 2:00 pm. His name was a name that I heard for the first time when I realized my partner was one of those far away stars that I kept myself away from. Twenty minutes of conversation opened my mind to a face that to my eyes was now, recognizable. 

 

      He reminded me that every person, every stranger, friend, and being that surrounds us possesses a history, depth and emotions. He reminded me that everyone lives events that shape our identity and perspectives of the outside world. We are pieces of places. We are pieces of people. We are pieces of others. 

 

     With fear, I was able to write my perspective of Monon, and who to my eyes, he was. He and the assignment reminded me that, we are all human. That the strangers that sat next to me, in class, in the train, and in such a large city, all possess a story to be told. 

 

      His story, similar to mine, portraits the reality of immigration. Portraying such a Spotify is necessary for anyone that might share those feelings, such as Monon and myself at some point. I am privileged to portray a story of hope and progress. 

 

     Monon’s history reflects part of the struggles of immigration and being a foreigner. His story is for those who are still adapting to a society, to a country. For those who are looking to fit in and do can’t. For those who need hope that at the end, being a foreigner it’s not forever. That there’s hope for progress.
